The rain stopped, the sky cleared and the sun began to shine on the Blaze lads seeking to bounce back after conceding 11 lucky goals against the lads from the Echo league last week. We wondered whether we should have played Hatfield Peverel Panthers while it was still raining given that cats don't like water? The Panthers looked as though they would provide a tough test based for Blaze based on size alone - like all wild cats the centre forward must have been reared on red meat. Both teams started well but Blaze's defence was caught (cat) napping when the Panthers took the lead mid way through the first half. A tactical change followed to bolster Blaze's midfield and by half time, Blaze were ahead as Harris set Macsween away who finished with aplomb from a tight angle. Harris and the manager both claimed an assist - who says route 1 doesn't work? Shortly afterwards, Springthorpe sprung from midfield and slipped the ball past the keeper only for Monsell to grab the glory from his midfield partner by making sure from all of 6 inches.

The second half was also a pretty even affair characterised by last ditch defending and tough tackling. The latter was epitomised by Thomas who provided a masterclass in support of Johnson, Paterson and Sarhan, who was clearly struggling for full fitness. However, Panthers big number 10 always looked a threat even though he was well shackled most of the time. However, his persistence was rewarded as a long run led to a low cross which hit one of his team mates and rebounded over the line. Level pegging. Both teams had chances to win it but a fifth goal would have been harsh on the losers. It was a great match with fine battling performances and good football from both teams. Everyone left with their heads held high.
